The Ainu’s distinctive cultural heritage includes various festivals, such as the Bear Festival (Iyomante), in which bears are sent to their heavenly homeland as Kimun Kamui (mountain gods), and ceremonies honoring the owl god, who bestows blessings upon humans. These dances have been performed not only at Ainu festivals but also during family celebrations. They take many forms, including songs accompanied by sake brewing for festivals, ritual dances with strong ceremonial elements such as the “Sword Dance,” mimetic dances like the “Crane Dance,” and entertainment dances. All are centered around songs (upopo) and are often performed in a circle dance (rimse).
