Huge gorgeous lions, samurai helmets, sea breams, etc. run through the town with shouts of “Enya” and “Yoisa”!Karatsu Kunchi is an autumn festival at Karatsu Shrine. Fourteen floats, each of which looks strong and magnificent in its own way, from the first float, “Akajishi (red lion)” of Katana Town, to the 14th float, “Shippomaru” of Egawa Town, parade through the old castle town. The floats stand more than 7 meters high, weigh 2-3 tons, and beautifully decorated with lacquer and gold leaves. Hundreds of people in matching happi coats parade through the city, making the festival a picture scroll of the modern age. On November 2nd, at the evening festival called “Yoiyama”, visitors can enjoy the fantastic sight of the floats lit by lanterns. On the 3rd, during “Otabisho Shinko”, the floats are pulled into the deeply rutted sandy ground at the Otabisho resting point and aligned in front of the Nishinohama Myojindai.
