Witness the spirited tug-of-war with a giant rope of about 200 meters! This tradition is believed to have begun with Toyotomi Hideyoshi. This traditional festival is said to originate more than 400 years ago, when Toyotomi Hideyoshi took his position at Hizen Nagoya Castle. In order to boost the morale of his troops, Hideyoshi divided them into the eastern and western camps under Kato Kiyomasa and Fukushima Masanori respectively, and the head-rope of a military boat was used to separate them. At present, during the festival, the town is divided into the Oka team and the Hama team. Using a metal drum and a fire arrow as cues, the two teams pull their side of a rope of about 15 centimeters in diameter and about 200 meters long, shouting “yoisa, yoisa!” loudly. A total of three tug-of-war matches are held. If the Oka team wins, it is believed that the harvest will be plentiful, while if the Hama team wins, the fish catch will be abundant. The Takeo Wild Dance, a unique combination of bravery and eleganceThis traditional dance of Takeo City, Saga Prefecture, is ritualistically performed in Nakano, Asahicho (Iwai Hachiman Shrine); Udote, Higashikawanoboricho (Shoichii Shrine); and koze, Nishikawanoboricho (Matsuo Shrine). The Wild Dance is performed by dancers called mossho (which means general or master) and kaki (which means wall) dancers; flute, gong, and tight-drum players; bass-drum players; and singers. Everyone dances powerfully but gracefully in rhythm with the singers’ voices. The power, grace, and emotional lyrics on display here are unique to the region and are therefore a precious kind of art.Date:Every year on the first Saturday and the next Sunday in JunePlace:1st day: Karatsu City Yobuko Community Center; 2nd day: Yobuko SanjinjaTrain/bus: Take the bus from JR Nishi-Karatsu Station, and walk approximately 9 minutes from the Yobuko stop (Yobuko Sanjinja)Karatsu City Tourism Division (in Yobuko Community Center)Date:Every year during the autumn equinox in SeptemberPlace:Iwai Hachiman Shrine, Shoichii Shrine, and Matsuo ShrineTakeo City Tourist Association開催日:毎年6月第1土曜と翌日曜場所:1日目:唐津市呼子市民センター前、2日目:呼子三神社前電車・バス:JR「西唐津駅」よりバスに乗車、「呼子停留所」より徒歩約9分(呼子三神社)唐津市役所 観光課(呼子市民センター内) 0955-53-7165提供:武雄市教育委員会提供:武雄市教育委員会開催日:毎年9月彼岸の中日場所:磐井八幡社、正一位神社、松尾神社武雄市観光協会0954-23-7766提供:武雄市教育委員会提供:武雄市教育委員会1日目には元気いっぱいな「こども綱」、2日目には勇壮な「大人綱」が行われる。 The spirited kids’ tug-of-war is on the first day, while the heroic adults’ tug-of-war is on the second. For example, the dancers of Nakano focus on graceful hand movements, the dancers of Udote specialize in simple, powerful movements similar to martial arts forms, and the dancers of koze favor a powerful style emphasizing the contrast between stillness and movement. *The information provided is current as of the end of December 2025 (Reiwa 7).
