A summer festival at Suga Shrine with a history of approximately 700 years The origin of the Ogi Yamahiki Gion Festival (Uchiwa Gion) dates back to the late Kamakura period when Tanesada Chiba, who came from the Kanto region and founded the town of Ogi, held a mountain-pulling ceremony as part of his military training. After the fall of the Chiba clan, the festival was passed down to the Nabeshima family, whose members became the lords of the Ogi domain. The festival was held as a prayer for a good harvest, the eradication of epidemics, and the safety of the community. On the eve of the festival, the Yokomachi district's Furyu dance (a traditional folk art involving dancing to the rhythm of drums and cymbals) welcomes the gods. The following day, three floats, one from Kamimachi, one from Nakamachi, and one from Shimomachi, make an impactful appearance at the main festival. In particular, the float from the Shimomachi district takes two months to build by hand and without any nails in accordance with tradition, using only straw, bamboo, and vines.
