Banners by day, lanterns at night! The changing Yamagasa festival colors the summer night sky.This is one of the three major festivals that light up the summer in Fukuoka. Especially eye-catching is the moment when the banner floats transform into lantern floats at night. A pyramid of light is created in the dark night by removing the banners and decorations and installing 12 tiers of 309 lanterns. Wrapped in the flickering light of lanterns and the sound of gongs and drums, while more than 80 people carrying the floats shout “Yoitosa, yoitosa,” the procession is both majestic and graceful. It is the moment when the excitement of the festival reaches its peak.The puppet bridge and rapid costume changes are a must-see!Masterful craftsmanship is showcased on a three-tiered stage Lantern puppet performances are held over three days at Fukushima Hachiman Shrine. A three-story float is set up during the festival (a float which, in the past, was built without any nails or fasteners). Live music echoes from the top, while in the center the “yokozukai” puppeteers control the puppets from the left and right, and on the lower level the “shitazukai” puppeteers operate them with strings to support the stage. This performance showcases the exquisite skills of well-coordinated puppeteers. The dolls move from side to side, and their costumes change in the blink of an eye.
