The most impressive thing about the performance is the splendid baton handling of the taiko drummers. In the evening, there is a set taiko drum performance.車の前後に載せた二台の太鼓を叩きながら練り歩く形は明治以降になってからで、「ヤッサヤレヤレ」と綱を曳く子供たちのお囃子、ヂャンガラ(摺り鉦)の音、ドロ・カンと呼ばれる太鼓が、一つの塊となる。ゆったりと移動しながらの両面歩行打ちこそ全国でも類のないもので、演奏のテンポがどんなに変化しても一糸乱れないことが技の見せ所で祭の真骨頂と言える。小倉祇園太鼓は毎年7月に開催され、土曜日の「子ども競演会」と日曜日の「太鼓総見」が見どころ。どちらも揃い浴衣・法被に身を包んだ延べ75組が参加する。このような小倉祇園太鼓保存振興会の活動は、子供から高齢者まで世代を超えた地域の絆を深めるとともに、小倉祇園太鼓の魅力を高め、街の賑わいづくりや観光並びに商店街振興に大変寄与している。Gion-san, the treasure of this city!Originally modeled after the Gion festival in Kyoto, Kokura’s O-Gion-san is said to have started out as a Noh play. The two drums on the front and back of the floats, which are beaten as they parade through the streets, were introduced after the Meiji period (1868-1912). The children pulling the rope while shouting “Yassa Yareyare,” the sound of the jangara (sliding gong), and the drum called Doro Kan all come together like a symphony. The double-sided walking beat, which is performed while moving slowly, is unparalleled in Japan, and is a true highlight of the festival, a display of skill that never wavers no matter how much the tempo of the performance changes. The Kokura Gion Taiko Festival is held every July, with Saturday’s “Children’s Performance” and Sunday’s “Taiko Soken” being the highlights of the festival. Both events are attended by a total of 75 groups dressed in matching yukata and happi (festival coat).
