It is said that if a child passes through the kasaboko, he or she will grow up to be strong.Young female performers wearing dancers’ costumes, as well as scarlet hakama and a celestial crown, offer a special children’s dance. As the dance proceeds through the town, they are accompanied by music played by the boys and local songs sung by the adults. A musical performance that opens the Hakata Dontaku Parade! Medieval entertainment with three Lucky Gods and children going around the city celebratingHakata Matsubayashi is the main attraction that kicks off the parade at the Hakata Dontaku Port Festival. Three Lucky Gods (Fukujin, Ebisu, and Daikoku) and children go around the town. The three Lucky Gods ride on horses, while the children, wearing Karusan (a kind of tubular hakama with a narrow hem) and Kataginu (sleeveless short jacket), play the drums and sing Iitate chants (sung as if reading a script). The adults, all dressed in the same costumes as the children, carry Kasaboko (a special umbrella). The children (the dancers) ride on a float, wearing a crown, a dancer's robe and scarlet hakama, accompanied by adults in Karusan or Kataginu who go around the town singing Iitate chants. At certain places, the float stops and the girls dance to the music played by the boys and chants sung by the adults. This was originally a small New Year event, featuring a ritual where a pine tree―a representative of the gods―was cut down in the forest and brought home to pray for good fortune in the coming year, and it later developed into a performing folk art. This is a rare example of a ritual that reached its heyday in the Muromachi Period and is still taking place to this day. *The information provided is current as of the end of December 2025 (Reiwa 7).
