A sacred ritual in which tradition lives on, including standing at the top of a pine pillar and using a katana to cleave through an onusa (wooden Shinto wand)This Shugendo (Way of Trials) festival, which has been passed down in Kanda Town, Fukuoka Prefecture, has a history going back around 1,000 years. The festival starts with a mikoshi (portable shrine) event, which is followed by various Shinto rituals, one after another: Onie, Tanemaki (seed sowing), Tauchi (field tilling), the Masakari Mai (axe dance), and the Naginata Mai (halberd dance). Finally, the festival concludes with a climactic Heikiri (nusa cutting) ritual. The main ritualist appears before the onlookers, dressed as a Yamabushi (a mountain ascetic hermit) and accompanied by the sound of conch shells. He climbs an approximately 11-meter-tall pine pillar that has been set up for the ritual, carrying an onusa on his back as he does so, and then he uses a katana (a Japanese sword) to cleave through the bamboo part of the onusa. The katana flashes through the air, almost seeming to cut right through the tense atmosphere. This sacred spectacle takes the audience’s breath away.Watch performers dance while carrying drums that weigh around 10 kilograms! An intense, full-body performing artEvery two years, the Kannogaku ceremony is held at Otomi Shrine, which is in Buzen City, Fukuoka Prefecture. This ceremony is also referred to as Gakuuchi, and it is a style of folk art during which performers dance while beating drums. Each dancer holds a large shime-daiko (tight drum), which boasts an impressive weight of around 10 kilograms and a diameter of around 55 centimeters, against their chest and clenches a drumstick high in one hand. Each dancer then vigorously turns while standing on one foot and then uses the strength of their entire body to strike their drum. The powerful movements of the dancers, the thunderous sounds of their drums, and their overflowing energy combine to create an almost overwhelming sense of vigor as the excitement builds to a satisfying climax.Date:Every year on the third Sunday in AprilPlace:Hakusan Taga ShrineTrain: Take a town-run community bus from JR Obase-Nishikodai-mae Station, and then walk about 60 minutes from the Seibu Kōminkan bus stop093-434-2212, person in charge of town history, Lifelong Learning Division, Kanda Town Board of EducationDate:Every two years on April 30 and May 1Place:Otomi Shrine, Sumiyoshi Otabisho, and shrines in the Shiromaru areaCar: About eight minutes by car from the Buzen I.C., which is on the Higashikyushu Expressway (Otomi Shrine)Buzen Kannōgaku Preservation Society 0979-83-3450 (Otomi Shrine)開催日:毎年4月の第3日曜日場所:白山多賀神社電車:JR「小波瀬西工大前駅」より町営コミュニティバス乗車、「西部公民館」停留所より徒歩約60分苅田町教育委員会生涯学習課まちの歴史担当 093-434-2212開催日:隔年の4月30日・5月1日場所:大富神社、住吉御旅所、四郎丸地区の各神社車:東九州自動車道「豊前I.C.」 The shimenawa paper that is cut off is said to house the spirit of a kami (a god), and picking this up and mixing it with seed rice at home apparently ensures a bountiful harvest. The Kannogaku ceremony is performed by a total of around 30 gakunin (performers), including six nakagaku (core performers) who stand in the center and numerous uchiwa-tsukai (fan bearers) who form a circle around them. *The information provided is current as of the end of December 2025 (Reiwa 7).
