One of the three Great Fire Festivals of Japan, with a history of over 1,600 years.A ceremony for driving out evil spirits on the final day of the Demon Festival, January 7th, following New Year’s Eve. A group of youths wearing only loincloths gather with small torches at 7 p.m. A purification ritual where a sacred approach is turned into a river of fire and sand is purified. Six huge torches are lit at 9:30 p.m. A spectacular celebration of fire and nudity begins with huge flames lighting up the darkness, sparks, and the sounds of firecrackers. After the sacred spear-mask ritual amidst the vigorous beating of bells and drums, the youths valiantly go around the shrine supporting huge torches as they are covered with sparks.A quintessential performing art that uses dancing and drumming passed down over the generations to conjure up a world of fantasyKowakamai, a style of dancing passed down in Setakamachi Oe (Miyama City, Fukuoka Prefecture), is also known as Oe no Mee, and it has an approximately 700-year history behind what it looks like today. Each dancer holds a chukei folding fan in their right hand, and they spread their hands wide as they sing and dance to the rhythm of a kozutsumigata (a hand drummer) playing for them. The feet of the dancers move in concert with the sound of the kozutsumi (hand drum), resulting in an exquisite harmony between the dancers and drummer. The sounds of the drum ringing out in the silence coalesce with the dance, giving onlookers the chance to experience truly timeless beauty.Date:Every year on January 7Place:Tamataregu Shrine at Daizenji TempleTrain: About 5 min. on foot from Daizenji Station on the Nishitetsu Tenjin Omuta LineDaizenji Tamataregu Oniyo Fire Festival Preservation SocietyDate:Every year on January 20Place:Oetenman ShrineCar: About five minutes by car from the Miyama-Yanagawa I.C., which is on the Kyushu Expressway(There is no parking lot near Oetenman Shrine, so please use public transport.)Train: 20 minutes on foot from JR Setaka Station Cultural Assets Division, Social Education Department, Miyama City Hall 00※掲載されている情報は、令和7(2025)年12月末現在の情報であり、お出かけの際には、事前に最新情報をご確認下さい。 *The information provided is current as of the end of December 2025 (Reiwa 7).
