Dancing with the passion of Southern Tosa!Yosakoi Festival was first held in August 1954 to cheer up the citizens and improve their health, hoping to blow away the economic recession of the time and revitalize the shopping district. Yosakoi Naruko Odori is a major performing art integral to the Yosakoi Festival, which is held annually in Kochi City from August 9 to 12. The songs and dances were performed for the first time just before the first festival on August 10, 1954. Men and women of all ages dance around Kochi Castle, holding vermilion-lacquered naruko (a tool used to drive away crop-destroying birds and other predators from the fields) in both hands and calling out to the crowd. The first event had 750 participants, but now as many as 20,000 dancers participate, with each team expressing their individuality. Performances from rock bands and other types of music are also included as well as traditional styles. Hairstyles and costumes are becoming more flamboyant, and the choreography has also become more diverse, ranging from classical to samba and rock. The dancers are also accompanied by gorgeous vehicles called jikatasha, which are used to inspire the dancers. Singing and dancing on them is livening up the Yosakoi festival. In 1992, students from Hokkaido who were fascinated by the Yosakoi Festival held the YOSAKOI Soran Festival. Their success spread throughout the country, and Yosakoi festivals began to be held one after another in various parts of Japan.
