He studied with the Kano school of painting, serving the chief retainer of the domain as official painter. Due to a set of unfortunate circumstances, he was banished from the Kano school, upon which he began to wander from place to place. He eventually decided to live with his aunt in Akaoka Town (now Konan City), where he was commissioned by a patron to make kabuki prints. At present, amongst Ekin’s surviving kabuki folding screens, 23 remain in Akaoka. The Tosa Ekin Kabuki Preservation Society was formed with the aim of performing the kabuki depicted on these folding screens, which have been designated as Tangible Cultural Properties of Kochi Prefecture. This was first achieved at the 17th Tosa Akaoka Ekin Festival, held in July 1993. The Tosa Akaoka Ekin Festival—the main focus of the Preservation society—was slated to be held at Bentenza, the local playhouse, but was ultimately cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. The festival was re-launched with the addition of new child actors and students. People of the region are working to perpetuate the culture developed by Ekin, who was considered the pride of the local area, together with the culture developed by local residents, in order to pass them on to future generations, and also expand on collaborative projects beyond the local region.
