An unusual spring festival held to ward off summer illnesses.A spring festival with over four hundred years of tradition held in prayers for good harvest and good health. It is known as one of the three most unusual festivals of Tosa and the “mud festival of a petticoat government” because women in yukatas cover the faces of men with mud. A sacred ritual is held at the historic Wakamiya Hachiman-gu Shrine, which was built in the twelfth century, and the mud covering commences after rice is planted in the ceremonial rice field. Not only the local men, but also tourists can get their faces covered with mud if they want. Women from places such as the entire Nagahama area and Katsurahama come out to cover faces with mud and liven up the festivities during these three days.The fishermen dance with auspicious conical traditional hats, winding through important places of the fishing sector as a prayer for a great catch.This traditional performance, held at the low point of the bonito fishing season, which is June 10th of the old calendar, serves as an occasion to make offerings of fish to the gods and to pray for a plentiful catch. The event dates back approximately 300 years. Fishermen and other people engaged in the fishing industry wear bright-colored conical hats and traditional yukata decorated with sea bream or bonito. They form a circle around performers holding percussion instruments and dance as they chant “shittoroto, shittoroto.” The dance begins at Ebisu Shrine, Muroto City.
