Both are representative traditional performing arts of the Nanyo region centered around Uwajima.成立した。家臣や商人らが東北地方から移住し、宇和島伊達家による城下町整備の中で、宇和津彦神社が総鎮守として建立された。毎年10月29日に行われる宇和津彦神社の秋祭は、南予地方特有の牛鬼や鹿踊りが城下町を練り歩く。神輿の先払いをする牛鬼は、大きく開いた口と鋭い角、力強い動きが特徴的で、悪霊を払うとされている。一方、仙台から伝わったとされる鹿踊りは、仙台地方の活発な踊りとは対照的に、張り子製の鹿頭を被り、太鼓を打ちながらゆったりと踊る独特の叙情が魅力だ。宇和津彦神社で披露される「八ツ鹿踊り」は、市の無形民俗文化財に指定されている。一般的な5頭立てではなく、1頭の牝鹿と7頭の雄鹿で構成され、変声期前の少年たちが踊り手となる。着物仕立ての装束と相まって、南予地方随一の優雅さを誇る。宇和津彦神社の秋祭は、南予一円に伝わる祭礼の原型であり、歴史と伝統が息づく地域の宝である。The Powerful Ushi-Oni and the Graceful Deer DanceIn 1614, following his military achievements in the Winter Campaign of Osaka, Date Hidemune, the eldest son of Date Masamune, became the feudal lord and established the Uwajima Domain. As vassals and merchants migrated from the Tohoku region, the Uwajima Date clan developed the castle town and designated Uwatsuhiko Shrine as its principal guardian shrine. Held annually on October 29, the shrine’s Autumn Festival features the Nanyo region’s distinctive Ushi-Oni and Deer Dance parading through the castle town. The Ushi-Oni, which leads the mikoshi (portable shrine) procession, is known for its gaping mouth, sharp horns, and vigorous movements believed to ward off evil spirits. In contrast, the Shika Odori (Deer Dance), said to have originated from Sendai, is gentler and more lyrical than the lively dances of its northern counterpart. Dancers wear papier-mâché deer heads and move gracefully while rhythmically beating drums. The “Eight Deer Dance” performed at Uwatsuhiko Shrine is designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Uwajima City. Unlike the typical five-deer formation, it features one doe and seven stags, performed by boys before their voice change due to puberty. Combined with kimono-style costumes, it is renowned for its refined elegance, the finest in the Nanyo region.
