It is performed every year in May at spring festivals held at various shrines throughout Imabari City. Accompanied by the rhythmic beats of large and small drums, and sometimes gongs and flutes, participants climb onto each other's shoulders, rising to three or four tiers in height. At the top tier, a young boy wears a lion head and performs as the lion cub. The lion heads come in male and female varieties, with black fur representing the male and white fur representing the female. The boy wearing the lion head at the top, dressed in a gorgeous costume, draws cheers from the audience with his elegant movements. It is said that the lion dance evolved into a higher and higher form because people wanted to get closer to the gods, who are believed to be watching over our lives from heaven. Additionally, the lion boy at the top is considered a treasure who will inherit the village, and the villagers unite to protect him. Imabari's Tsugishishi is a heroic performing art said to have originated from the “Daidai Kagura” and “Nitsugi no Shishimai” traditions passed down at Ise Shrine.
