The Kakikurabe event, where the participants try to outdo each other with grace and gallantry, is spectacular.This festival, which has a history going back over 170 years, welcomes autumn in Toyohama, Kanonji City. Chōsa drum stands, which tower over onlookers at a height of about five meters and are richly decorated with gold-thread embroidery, parade through the streets. The drum bearers, clad in happi coats, yell powerfully as they control the drum stands, creating quite an impressive sight. The climax of the festival is the Kakikurabe event, during which the teams in charge of each of the 23 drum stands compete with each other. The teams take turns lifting their massive drum stands into the air, a courageous and captivating competition, and each successful lift is met by a resounding cheer.
