Lively lion leap about, adorned with vibrant yutan covers and depicting scenes like Nasu no Yoichi and the fan target, or Momotaro defeating demons. Particularly memorable is the “Parent-Child Lion Dance,” a folk art that expresses the story of parent and child, leaving a lasting impression on people's hearts. This lion dance, which expresses parental affection, is a rare sight in Japan and the only one of its kind in Kagawa Prefecture. Because of its unique character, it was designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Kagawa Prefecture in 1977. The dance is offered each October during the autumn festival at local shrines — the Yatsubo Group performs at Kasuga Shrine, while the Nakasuji Group performs at Hatada Hachimangu Shrine. On the evening before the offering, during the yoimatsuri (eve festival), a ritual called iezukai is performed, in which members visit the homes of the lion dance performers to ward off misfortune. Each lion — parent and child — is performed by two dancers, with the role of the child lion played by elementary school students. The performance is accompanied by musical instruments such as gongs, drums, and flutes. The dance portrays scenes such as the parent and child lions playing joyfully, the parent lion nursing the child lion, the parent casting the child into a deep valley to train it, rescuing and comforting the fainted child, and finally rejoicing in the child’s growth.
