Mannō, the Ayako Odori handed down in Sabumi, is one such rain dance, which originates from a legend in which one year, a girl named Aya shared her sorrow with a traveling monk (Kōbō Daishi). The crops were about to wither completely and everyone was suffering, but once the dance was performed in the village, it finally rained. The dance is dedicated to Kamo Shrine in Sabumi on the first Sunday of September every other year. Ayako Odori begins with the waving of sticks and pole swords (naginata) to purify the place, followed by a dialogue. Next, the dancers make a formation and dance, accompanied by 12 songs and drums, flutes, hand drums, and gongs, all centered around the speaker (genji), wearing a hat adorned with flowers and holding a large fan. The dancers are divided into groups for a small dance, large dance, and side dance, and the skillful elementary and middle school boys who dance in women's clothing attract particular attention.
