The Awa Odori in Tokushima City is one of Japan’s most famous events, attracting over one million visitors from both inside and outside the country. It is counted among the three major festivals of Shikoku and as one of Japan’s three major Bon dances. Accompanied by the rhythmic beats in duple time of the shamisen, drums, cymbals, and flutes, women dance gracefully while men dance boldly with their hips lowered. It is said to have originated from spirit dances and Buddhist chanting dances, but its exact origins remain unclear. The festival is said to have originated from the Bon dances held in the castle town of Tokushima and evolved into its current form while incorporating elements of folk arts such as “Niwaka-odori,” “Kumi-odori,” and “Zomeki-odori.” It is said that the festival became even more popular after Hachisuka Iemasa entered Tokushima in 1585 and accumulated wealth through the trade of indigo and salt. Taking advantage of the city’s water-rich geography, indigo merchants flourished, and Awa Odori gradually developed into a more elaborate form. Even after the decline of Awa indigo, efforts to promote tourism continued, and the dance became firmly established in the local community as a free form of popular entertainment. The post-war revival of Awa Odori was particularly remarkable, and it has since become one of Japan’s most representative traditional performing arts. At the performance venues, there is the “Nagashi-odori” (parade dancing), where dancers move forward while dancing, and at the dance squares and stages, there are “Wa-odori” (circle dancing) and “Butai-odori” (stage dancing). Additionally, throughout the venue area, creatively designed dances can be enjoyed from the evening until late at night. As the saying goes, “Those who dance are fools, and those who watch are fools; you will be fools either way, so why not dance?” Visitors can also participate in the dance as part of a temporary group, Niwaka-ren on the day of the event.
