The origin of this dance dates back around 1,100 years, when the governor of Sanuki, Sugawara no Michizane, performed this dance as a prayer for rain. The dance is performed as a prayer for a good harvest as well as good health, and begins with the sound of a conch shell. Performers in lion and tengu costumes dance in a circle to the sound of gongs and drums, creating a dynamic atmosphere. The music echoes through the air, while the singing echoes through the mountains.
