They are based on the Tayū-mai style, which alternates between forward and backward movements.楽で、集落の鎮守社に悪疫退散、五穀豊穣、火難祓いを祈願し奉納してきたものである。明治4年の太政官布告で神官による神楽奉納が禁止された後は、里人によって神楽が継承され、現在は保存会と地域住民が一体となり継承している。7年に一度4月に行われる式年祭では、岩国市行波の錦川河川敷に神殿(かんどん)を設け、一昼夜半15時間かけて全十二演目と八関の舞を泰納する。神舞は、里人に継承後も、観衆の目を意識した舞の改変や、華美に走ったりすることなく、先人たちの願いをよく伝えてきている。また、毎年10月中旬の秋季例祭では、地区の鎮守・荒玉社の境内でその一部が奉納されている。更に、岩国市における伝統芸能の保存と地域文化の高揚のため毎年開催される「岩国民俗芸能まつり」にも継続的に出演している。式年祭は、神事であるが、観光客をはじめ非常に多くの人が訪れ、錦川河川敷も来観者で埋め尽くされる。Passed down in a small village since the Edo period for over 350 years! A traditional divine dance offered as a prayer for prosperous descendants and abundant harvests.The origins of the Iwakuni Yukaba Divine Dance are believed to date back to before 1668 (Kanbun 8). Originally a kagura (Shinto ritual dance) performed by a hereditary priestly family, it was offered at the village guardian shrine to pray for protection from epidemics, abundant harvests, and fire prevention. After the Imperial Decree of 1871 prohibited kagura offerings by priests, the villagers took over its preservation. Today, it is carried on jointly by a preservation society and local residents. During the Shikinen Festival, held once every seven years in April, a temporary shrine is erected on the Nishikigawa riverbed in Yukaba, Iwakuni City. Over a day and a half (15 hours), all twelve performances and the Hasseki no Mai dance are solemnly performed. Even after being passed down to the villagers, the sacred dances have faithfully conveyed the wishes of their ancestors, without being modified to entertain audiences or made overly ornate. Furthermore, during the annual Autumn Festival in mid-October, parts of the dances are performed at the precincts of the local guardian shrine, Aratama Shrine. The group also regularly participates in the annual “Iwakuni Folk Performing Arts Festival,” which aims to preserve traditional performing arts and promote local culture in Iwakuni City.
