Even historically, the Gion Festival of Kyoto contained ancient elements. The Ouchi clan, consisting of lords of Yamaguchi during the Sengoku Period, held a certain admiration for the culture of Kyoto, which they brought back to Yamaguchi. The White Heron Dance is performed in Kyoto and Shimane Prefecture, amongst others, all of which were suspended for some time during history before being revived. However, the White Heron Dance of Yasaka Shrine is the only such dance in all of Japan to have been perpetuated for more than 650 years. It is also important to note that the heron is considered a messenger of the gods.Two dancers, acting as a male and female pair of white herons, wear white shrouds, long white kimono-like garments, white hakama, and white shin covers, along with a heron head and white feathers, dancing gracefully to a gentle rhythm. Then two red bear dancers come on the scene, threatening to shoot the herons. The story goes that two young boys beat kakko (hourglass drums called Kanko) strapped to their waists to warn the herons and save them.
