The surviving fe-male attendants of the Taira clan continued to pay their respects to him every year on the anniversary of his death, dressed in formal court attire. This be-came the origin of the Joro Sanpai at the Sentei Festival. It is said that the Sentei Festival itself began when Emperor Go-Toba (the 82nd emperor) enshrined a sacred statue of Emperor Antoku at Amida-ji Temple (present-day Akama Shrine) and held a memorial service (Senteie) to console his spirit. Even after the Heike ladies had all passed away, the Jōrō Dōchū procession was carried on by local courtesans, who inherit-ed their devotion and sentiments. Every year on May 3rd, a procession is made from Izaki-cho, where Emperor Antoku's body is said to have been returned, to Akama Shrine. Five groups of Joro in gorgeous costumes parade through the streets of Shimonoseki, showing off their traditional walking style, and the event climaxes with a visit to Akama Shrine. There is an old saying that goes, “Late emperor of Seki, Kokura no Gion, if there is no rain, it will rain gold.” The festival attracts hundreds of thousands of people, and it is said that Shimonoseki owes its prosperity to it. The dazzling procession of Joro is praised as one of the most spectacular sights in Japan and continues to attract many people as a symbol of the Shimonoseki Straits Festival.
