A traditional fire festival passed down for roughly 380 years.A festival of fire passed down since the 17th century in the Atsuki District of Yanai City. Starting with an event where young men clad in white raise two 20-meter-tall deities by the sea in front of Shinmei Shrine, on the east and west sides, on the morning of February 11 (a national holiday) every year. They dedicate their dances twice a day at noon and at night to the deities wearing their holy 5-colored sashes. The men are used with their weapons for dances while the women are used for their exquisite use of bamboo hats. During this festival, the deified spirit of Michizane is carried to Katsuma-no-Ura, the local harbor where he first arrived. The arrival of the Imperial decree proclaiming Michizane’s innocence is also commemorated. Later, during the Edo Period, groups of men that would ritually purify themselves in rivers earned the name “naked monks.” Today, the ritual is performed by approximately 5,000 people. At 6 pm on Saturday, the day of the festival, hundreds of “naked monks” rush into the shrine, and carry out two mikoshi portable shrines while chanting “wasshoi” (heave-ho!).
