Furthermore, the traditional performing art of kagura has been actively handed down in the city since ancient times. When one thinks of kagura, they imagine a “Shinto ritual” with a sacred and solemn atmosphere. Although kagura in Hiroshima (known as “Geihoku Kagura”) has its origins in Shinto rituals, it has developed into a very popular and spontaneous traditional performing art with a high theatrical quality. The new kagura that emerged from Akitakata City after World War II has grown into a unique brand of kagura called “Hiroshima Akitakata Kagura“. It has a strong sense of speed, and its gorgeous costumes weighing approximately 20 kilograms, magnificent dances, and story structure move the hearts of those who watch it. The third sector, which operates “Kagura Monzen Toji-mura”, a tourist base facility opened in 1998, and the Akitakata Kagura Council (22 groups) collaborate to hold regular performances about 150 days a year at the “Kagura Dome,” which houses a permanent kagura hall, attracting over 150,000 people a year.
