A kagura retaining the traditional Shinto element of the mystical oracleThis kagura, which honors the spirits of ancestors, is performed for the deity Motoyama Sanpo Kojin in the Tojo and Seijo areas of eastern Shobara. In the agricultural area of the city, there remains a small-scale system (called myo) of about ten houses—a remnant of what life looked like here hundreds of years ago—which organizes this kagura. Motoyama Sanpo Kojin is said to represent the totality of the ancestral spirits of the myo, particularly the personality of protector deity Ubasuna-no-kami, which is the reason why rituals surrounding belief in this deity are extremely strict. Smaller kagura performances are held annually, while larger ones are held in specific years. Traditionally, the village was involved with the larger performances, which are considered very solemn events. Kagura was originally intended to comfort departed souls, and this particular kagura retains that purpose. It is a rare example, not just in the area but around the entire nation, of the preserved Shinto ritual of the oracle. In the past, okagura (a more complex kagura performance) was staged using both the otoya and kotoya structures, which were built in the fields specifically for these performances. In more recent years, however, they have been staged in traditional houses of the myo area. The kotoya welcomes the god Kojin (a wrathful deity) for the yutate shinji, holds rokkujin-asobi, the rituals of enshrining Kojin, and more. Later, the event moves to the otoya, where the shichi-za Shinto ritual (seven sacred dances), the shinno (Noh rituals including yaegaki, kuni-yuzuri, iwato, Noh dedicated to Kojin, and more), are performed, followed by the gogyo-no-mai (five-element dances), offerings to Kojin (oracle), tatsu-oshi, kojin-okuri (sending away of the god Kojin), and haikagura (ash kagura). The seven shichi-za Shinto ritual dances are a solemn affair, imbued with themes of bravery and resplendence, and have been passed down since ancient times in their original forms. Particularly striking is the “long sword of Saruta” of the Sarutahiko-no-mai (dances of Sarutahiko) for exorcism. The kami-mukae dance, the last of the seven shichi-za ritual dances, is also a magnificent dance worthy of special mention. 0824-73-1189Date:Yokagura dedication at Nuka Shrine: Every year from the third Saturday of November to early morning of the following day / in the year called “Shikinen” (varies by region, please ask for details at the address below). Witness this mystical moment where deity and man become one. *The information provided is current as of the end of December 2025 (Reiwa 7).
