In this region, there has long been an agricultural ritual called “Hayashida,” in which people worship the god of rice fields and pray for the safety and fertility of rice crops. During the Edo period (1603–1868), the scene of “Otaue” (grand rice plant-ing)—which was almost the same as today’s Hanataue—was depicted in records. Although the event ceased temporarily in the middle of the Meiji peri-od (1868–1912), it was revived in the early Showa period (1926–1989). The participating oxen were adorned with splendid flower saddles, and the Saotome (rice-planting maidens) wore beautifully decorated costumes, giving rise to the name “Hanataue” (flower rice planting). Since 1954, the event has been held together with the local Hanagasa Dance. In the Mibu Hanataue, black oxen decorated with vivid ornaments and flower saddles plow the fields, while gorgeously dressed Saotome enter the rice paddies to begin planting. Behind them, musicians line up with drums hanging in front of their bodies. The rice-planting song begins with the chant of “Sanbai” and the beating of drums.
