Brilliant images created using lanterns and a boat-rowing race! Festivals of fire and water derived from the Genpei WarThese traditional events derived from the Genpei War of the 12th century are held in the Kanaura area of Kasaoka City, Okayama Prefecture. Hittaka is a dreamlike fire festival during which glowing images are created using lanterns. Wooden frames are erected halfway up Mt. Gyosha, which lies to the east of the Yoshida River, and Mt. Myoken, which lies to the west, and then around 300 to 400 lanterns are hung from them to create images and see which one is the best. Meanwhile, Oshigurango, which is held on the next day, is a rowing race between two Japanese fishing boats, which are navigated by Team Genji (white) and Team Heike (red). Each boat has six rowers, and they frantically race to see who can reach the shore first.A dance performed around a large lantern decorated with paper cutouts! A type of Bon Odori dancing passed down around the foot of the Hiruzen HighlandsBon Odori dancing is performed at various shrines and temples around Hiruzen every year during the celebration of Obon. During the Ōmiya Dance, participants gather around a large lantern decorated with paper cutouts called shirige, which are made by making intricate cuts in washi (traditional Japanese paper), where they dance in time with leisurely songs and drumbeats. There are three types of dances: Aoi, Shisshi, and Maneki. During the Maneki dance, dancers wear costumes called tenko as they perform a dance that is intended to be humorous, making the dance circle even more lively. The event draws in both dancers and onlookers as Hiruzen’s nighttime festivities entrance them with their enchanting atmosphere.Date:The Saturday and Sunday closest to May 5 on the lunar calendarPlace:Kanaura areaCar: About 10 minutes by car from the Kasaoka I.C., which is on the Sanyo ExpresswayLifelong Learning Division, Kasaoka City Board of EducationDate:Every year from late July until late AugustPlace:Yatsuka, Kawakami areaCar: About 10 minutes by car from the Hiruzen I.C., which is on the Yonago Expressway (Fukuda Shrine)Hiruzen Tourism Association開催日:旧暦の5月5日に近い土・日曜場所:金浦地区車:山陽自動車道「笠岡I.C.」 During Oshigurango, Japanese boats rowed by Team Genji and Team Heike pummel each other with seawater as they powerfully race for the shore.
