Every year on the nights of August 13 through 16, the islanders gather at the island's community center or on the beach to dance. Originally, this dance, also called Eko Odori, was performed for ancestral memorial services. It is said that the dance was originally created to mourn the souls of those who had died in the Genpei Battle of Mizushima, which took place more than 800 years ago in the Seto Inland Sea. The most distinctive feature of this dance is that several different dances are performed simultaneously with a single Ondo (song) and taiko drum. Today, 13 types of dances have been handed down. The way the dancers, each with different costumes and gestures, create harmony with a single Ondo is a sight to behold. More than 20 songs have been handed down for the Shiraishi Odori Ondo, the most representative of which are “Nasu Yoichi,” “Ishidomaru,” “Tamba Yosaku,” “Sai no Kawara,” and “Yamada no Tsuyu”. Shiraishi Odori has been handed down by the Shiraishi Odori Association, to which all islanders belong.
