The “Horan Enya” is the common name for Matsue Jozan Inari Shrine’s Shikinen Shinkosai in Shimane Prefecture, which has a 370-year history. Held once every ten years, it is the pride of Matsue, the City of Water. It is one of the three largest boat festivals in Japan, along with the Tenjin Festival in Osaka Prefecture and the Kangensai Festival at Itsukushima Shrine in Hiroshima Prefecture. The highlights of the Shinkosai, which takes place over nine days, are the Togyosai, the Chunichisai, and the Kangyosai. People from the community called Godaichi, riding on colorfully decorated oar-denma boats, proudly perform the “Oar-denma Odori,” an Intangible Folk Cultural Property designated by Matsue City. It is performed on land boats during the Chunichisai.
