Izumo Kagura: A living tradition passed down to us from ancient timesGozagaeshinji (the Shinto ritual of relocating the deity) is held annually on September 24th at Sada Shrine in Kashima-cho, Matsue City. Zagaesai is an annual religious ritual where the goza (rush mats) are replaced at the main three shrines as well as the two auxiliary shrines. This ritual is also a type of senzasai, a ceremony where the shrine deity is moved. Gozagaesai is regarded as the most important amongst the rituals and festivals of Sada Shrine, and the Sada Shin Noh dances are held from the day of the ritual through the following day. There are three components to the program: 1) the Shichiza dance, performed without masks and with a branch of sakaki (sacred tree of Shinto), and a sacred Shinto paper object called “nusa”, 2) the Shiki Samban, and 3) the myth-based play Shin Noh. These three-part dances became known as the “Sada Shin Noh” dances as of the Taisho Period (1912-1926). At the time, the noh component of the Sada Shrine Ancient Ritual Preservation Society (precursor of the Sada Shin Noh Preservation Society run by shrine-goers of the area) was launched. Shin Noh is characterized by an authentic noh style formed over the past 400 years .Among three-part dances, it is a stylized noh dance comprised of a main actor as shite, and supporting actors as waki, tsure, and tomo.
