A precious art form that inherits ancient BugakuFrom the Nara to the Heian period, continental culture from ancient China, Korea, and other countries was actively imported to Japan, and in terms of performing arts, silent masked plays that combined dance and music were introduced in large numbers. They entered the capital first, and were eventually offered at major temples and shrines throughout the country. One example is Oki Kokubunji Rengeemai, an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan preserved on the island of Oki, which is a highly valuable performing art influenced by ancient religious rituals and continental culture, while also following the tradition of courtly dance and music.” Until it was temporarily discontinued due to the movement to abolish Buddhism in the early Meiji period (1868-1912), more than ten different dances were performed once every five years, and were a source of enjoyment for the people of the island.
