The ritualistic wrapping of vines around a centuries-old goshinboku (sacred tree)! An event held at the beginning of each mountain season to pray for safety during mountain workOyama Shrine, which is located in Fuse, Okinoshima Town, has no shrine buildings. Instead, the site uses a goshinboku (sacred tree) as a yorishiro (an object that attracts gods). Once every two years, the Fuse Mountain Festival is held here in April. During this festival, vines that are cut down in the nearby mountains the day before are wrapped around the goshinboku, which is a large cedar tree with a trunk circumference of around seven meters. A group of men in happi coats repeatedly shake the vines in time with a work song and then wrap them around the goshinboku seven and a half times.
