Gather around the fire in a large shack!A Koshogatsu (Little New Year) event for welcoming a god and praying for a good harvest from the seaThis Koshogatsu (Little New Year) event is held in the Ōura area of Isotake-chō, which is in Oda City, Shimane Prefecture. A cone-shaped shack called a guro, which has a diameter of approximately 10 meters, it built on the beach to welcome the god Toshitokujin and pray for a good harvest from the sea and good health in the next year. During the event, locals gather in the shack to warm themselves by the fire and chat late into the night. It is said that one can ward off illness by using this fire to cook mochi (rice cakes), dried fish, and other food and then eating it. Early in the morning on January 15, the last day of the event, the guro is disassembled and burned along with New Year’s decorations all the participants brought from home.Enjoy Kagura performances depicting famous scenes from myths at the home of the gods, where many legendary occurrences are remembered!The Hii River Basin is where Susanoo-no-Mikoto was said to have defeated a dragon in the Kojiki, which is Japan’s oldest book of historic accounts. Other locations in Unnan City, Shimane Prefecture, where many mythical events took place such as Amagafuchi, Happonsugi, and Nihon Hatsunomiya (Suga Shrine), can still be found today. The traditional performing art “Izumo Kagura”, based on myths and legends of the Izumo region - the home of the gods, can be seen every month at the Kodaitetsu Kayoukan, and is performed by 16 Kagura groups in the city.
