A ritual of fire passed down in a fishing village, held in prayers for bountiful catches of fish.This Sagichō (fire festival) event is held in Ketakachō Sakenotsu, Tottori City, to pray for good health and bountiful catches of fish. During the event, 12 lengths of mōsō bamboo are propped against a four to five-meter tall pine to create a cone-shaped tondō, and then sea breams, folding fans, minogumi shimenawa (sacred rope) decorations, and household New Year’s decorations are set up. At 2:00 in the afternoon, shirtless elementary-school boys purify themselves with sea water and then circle the tondō three times while holding kelp in their hands and shouting, “Wasshoi!
