There are five dances constituting the Maro lion dance. In Dochu-mai, a lion dances majestically on the way to the shrine. Hei-no-mai is performed on the shrine grounds, with the lion holding a bell in his right hand and a staff in his left one as he prays before the gods. The Sleeping Lion and Ukare Lion are woken up by a Tengu holding a bamboo offering called Hana and an Otafuku holding a phallic staff, and the Flower Dance, where the waking lion leaps up after the tengu sings “Give flowers to the lion.” The performance ends with a sword dance in which the lion and the tengu clash with swords.
