A portable shrine shaped like a fan is carried over to the waterfall, dwelling place of the gods of Kumano!The giant torch flames dancing wildly along the road approaching the shrine is a sight not to be missed.This is the annual summer festival of Kumano Nachi Taisha Grand Shrine. It is a Shinto ritual in which the 12 gods of Kumano are carried from the main shrine halfway up Mount Nachi to Hiro Shrine in front of the waterfall, believed to be the original ceremonial site. The gods are given offerings such as Yamato dancing, Nachi Dengaku, and a shrine ritual for a successful harvest, transferred to 12 fan-shaped portable shrines a meter in width and six meters in height, which represent “Nachi Falls,” and taken to Hiro Shrine. The highlight is the “Fire Ceremony”: 12 large torches weighing around 50 kg each welcome and purify the fan-shaped portable shrines on the approach to the shrine. Due to the spectacular sight of the dancing flames, this festival is counted as one of Japan’s three major fire festivals.A glorious festival with lavish boats decorating the surface of the waterThis festival is dedicated to Kochi, an island on the Koza River that the five surrounding districts of Koza, Furuta, Takaike Shimobe, Utsugi, and Tsukinose consider to be sacred. Lavish whaling boats decorated with gorgeous ornaments, head for the island of Koottama about 3 km upstream for the festival.
