A World Heritage fire festival that represents a dragon.A majestic fire festival over 1,400 years old held at Kamikura Shrine, which is part of the “Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range” World Heritage site. Roughly 2,000 men called “Noboriko” clad in white garments fastened with straw ropes run down a precipitous set of 538 stone steps from the top of Mount Kamikura at around 8:00 p.m. while carrying torches lit with sacred fire. Be captivated by the excitement and intensity reminiscent of dragon as sung by the locals, “A festival of lanterns is a festival for real men while the mountain becomes a waterfall of fire and a dragon comes down to us”. Only men can be “Noboriko” participants, but tourists from out of town can also join in.A performing art that depicts the entire rice farming process—from preparation to harvest!This is a New Year’s yoshuku ritual, passed down through generations as a prayer for a rich harvest and the abundance of five grains. It artistically represents the entire rice farming process—from the preparation for planting, to sowing seeds, planting rice, and harvesting. This traditional performing art, also called Ta-asobi (“rice field play”), is performed and offered once every two years at Henjo-ji Temple in Hanazono-Yanase, Katsuragi Town. In the main hall, Dainichidō, musicians in haori jackets and hakama trousers, take their seats. Amid a solemn atmosphere, young men appear and perform scenes of rice cultivation—such as field tilling, cow calling (ushiyobi), and rice planting.
