It is offered each year on October 12 during the evening festival of Yahashira Shrine. In Kamifukawa, it is customary for young men to join the shrine’s traditional ritual organization, the miyaza, at the age of seventeen. Because Daimokutate is performed as an offering to the tutelary deity by those newly joining the group, it also carries the character of a coming-of-age rite. Today the tradition survives only in Kamifukawa, where one of three pieces—“Itsukushima,” “Great Buddha Consecration,” or “Battle of Ishibashiyama”—is performed. On the night of the festival, performers wear tall eboshi hats, tuck fans into the backs of their collars, pick up their bows, and stand at designated positions around the stage. When the caller announces the order and role (for example, “First: Kiyomori”), the performers recite their lines with distinctive intonation. At the climax, one performer steps to the center of the stage, raises a fan, and performs the “Fushō Dance,” circling the stage with vigorous steps—a striking contrast to the otherwise solemn atmosphere.
