It is truly a majestic sight that will surely touch the heart of the audience.まま極楽浄土へ往生（現身往生（うつしみおうじょう））したとされる伝説の女性中将姫（ちゅうじょうひめ）の伝承を再現した荘厳な宗教劇で、平安時代中期に恵心僧都が當麻寺に仏面と装束を寄進したことにはじまるといわれている。毎年4月14日の當麻寺春の大祭で演じられる。當麻寺聖衆来迎練供養会式は、中将姫が二十五菩薩によって極楽浄土へ導かれる様を演劇風に再現している。當麻寺本堂である曼荼羅堂から東方にある娑婆堂まで長い架け橋（来迎橋（らいこうばし））現世と浄土をつなぐ橋）が渡され、その上を、金色の面の観音菩薩など二十五菩薩に扮した菩薩講の人たちが、中将姫の小像を蓮台に乗せて、極楽浄土に見立てた本堂に向かって練り歩き、浄土へ導く儀式である。曼荼羅堂は西方極楽浄土を象徴し、娑婆堂は俗世界を象徴している。観音菩薩は両手で蓮台を左右にすくい上げる所作を繰り返して進むことから「スクイボトケ」、これに続く勢至（せいし）菩薩は合掌しながら練り歩くことから「オガミボトケ」とも呼ばれている。Pure Land Buddhism flourishes again after a millennium.The Taima-dera Temple festival, featuring a procession of priests representing 25 Bodhisattva, is an epic religious drama based on the legend of “Chujo-hime” (Middle Captain Princess). According to legend, the princess ascended to the Buddhist Pure Land in the flesh―without passing away―at the age of 29, following the night-long presentation of the Taima mandala during the early-Heian Period. The ceremony at Taima-dera Temple is said to have originated with an offering of a Buddhist mask and costume by the monk Eshin Sozu (Genshin) during the early-Heian Period. The play is performed every April 14th at the Taima-dera Temple Spring Festival, while the Taima-dera procession recreates the ascendance of the Princess to the Pure Land with the 25 Bodhisattvas. The Raigobashi Bridge, a long bridge believed to connect the karmic world with the Pure Land, stretches from the Mandala Hall (Main Hall) eastward to the Shabado. The procession moves along the bridge with 25 priests taking on the roles of the 25 Bodhisattvas, such as the gold-masked Avalokiteshvara. They carry a statue of Chujo-hime on a lotus platform, as they proceed toward the Main Hall, which represents the Pure Land. The Mandala Hall represents the Western Pure Land, while the Shabado represents our karmic world.
