See ogres brandishing torches! An unusual festival of fire boasting about 500 years of traditionA festival of fire where a father ogre, mother ogre, and child ogre brandish torches burning wildly and drive disaster away from people. This is a traditional ceremony that is rare in Japan in that it involves ogres bringing good fortune. The ogres start to run at 9:00 p.m. They appear after events such as the reading of the sutras by priests and the Deva of Fire waving a torch at the kanji character for “water”. Be amazed at this strange scenery where three ogres run through the temple grounds scattering sparks as they become a sea of fire. There is also a daytime event where ogres can be seen running with unlit torches from 4:00 p.m. as well as a “gomaku” fire ritual from 7:00 p.m.Watch the tying of the giant “husband” and “wife” ropes in front of the gods -The “wedding” of the ropes rooted in legend-The Shinto ritual of Taasobi (“play in the rice fields”), held in the Ettsumi/Onishi area located to the north and south of the Hasegawa River, is performed to pray for a bountiful harvest and for the prosperity of one’s descendants. This festival is also known as the “wedding of the sacred ropes.” The “husband” and “wife” ropes are made at the Kasuga Shrine in the Ettsumi area and Ichikishima Shrine in the Onishi area respectively. Then, on February 11, the two ropes are tied together at Susanoo Shrine in the Irifune (“ship arrival”) ritual. According to legend, long ago, during a great flood, two gods were brought down the river from Miwa, located upstream, where Prince Susanoo-no- Mikoto (male) was helped at Ettsumi and Princess Inada (female) at Onishi. Thereafter, the two were worshipped in a “wedding” every new year. The festival is rooted in this legend.Date:January 14 every yearPlace:Dadado, Nenbutsuji TempleTrain: About 10 min. by car from JR Yamato-Futami StationCultural Properties Division, Board of Education SecretariatDate:Every year on February 11Place:Susanoo ShrineTrain: Approximately 30 minutes’ walk from Makimuku Station on the JR Sakurai LineTourism and Community-Building Dept., Sakurai City Call開催日:毎年1月14日場所:念仏寺陀々堂電車:JR「大和二見駅」より車で約10分教育委員会事務局 文化財課0747-24-2011開催日:毎年2月11日場所:素盞嗚神社電車:JR桜井線「巻向駅」より徒歩約30分桜井市役所観光まちづくり課0744-42-9111狂ったように吼える法螺貝や、太鼓を叩く強烈な音に包まれて、鬼面が闇の中に浮かび上がる。You can see ogre masks appearing out of the dark amidst the wild blowing of triton trumpets and intense sounds of drums beating. Prior to the ceremony for the arrival of the ships, the“husband”rope is set up in a rice field to create a sumo ring for “mud sumo.” It is said that the more mudthere is, the better the harvest! *The information provided is current as of the end of December 2025 (Reiwa 7).
