Tug the rope for a good harvest!A tug-of-war held in accordance with the Boys’ Festival of the old lunar calendar, serving as a divination for the year and as a prayer for the development of the district. It began in the Edo period and used to be widely practiced along the Japan Sea coast, but is now found only in limited areas, including this Kutani district. The event begins as night falls around 8 p.m. The participating children and adults are divided into groups and pull on a thick rope made of fresh iris, Japanese mugwort, Japanese pampas grass, and woven straw.
