A precious dance that brings 14th century entertainment to the present.A magnificent festival that announces the New Year in Suma, Kobe.A New Year’s festival event at Otoshi Shrine, located in Kuruma, Suma Ward, Kobe. Performers dance wearing divine masks that are enshrined as sacred objects, and pray for peace throughout the world, a tranquil land, a bountiful harvest, and household safety. The distinctive feature of the performance is that it is divided into four parts, including “Tsuyuharai,” “Okina Mai,” “Sanbaso,” and “Chichi no Jo,” modeled after the 14th century form. It is a treasured dance that reveals the evolution of the performance art. This nighttime ritual sees performers wearing costumes and divine masks dancing to the accompaniment of music, songs and shouts. It has a strong magical quality and creates a fantastical atmosphere.See larger puppets brought to life!Fall under the spell of their dynamic movements and complex facial expressionsThe Awaji Puppet Theater has a history of over 500 years. Outdoor shows known as Nogakeshibai were held back when touring performances were popular, which led to the birth of shows featuring large, impressive puppets. The largest dolls, some reaching 170 cm in height, close their eyes to appear sad and raise their eyebrows to appear angry. Complex dances with dynamic movements eloquently convey the subtleties of human emotions without a word being uttered. There is a strained atmosphere in the silence, and the whole stage moves with liveliness during intense scenes.
