Solemn dance and music to remember Prince Shotoku, on a stone stage adorned with red spider lily flowersMusic and dancing at the Shoryoe Festival is performed every year on April 22nd, the anniversary of Prince Shotoku’s death. Dancers perform on a stone stage adorned with large red spider lilies at each corner. The bugaku dances include Soriko, performed by five dancers wearing thick paper and white silk masks, and Karyo-bin, a light-footed dance performed by children wearing colorful bird feathers on their backs, and are performed in parallel with the memorial service for about five hours. The solemn music echoes through the stage, recreating an elegant world passed down through the ages.Rice-planting in the old tradition, accompanied by lively dancing! This Shinto ritual dates back some 1,800 years!This rice-planting event is held in various places around the nation, during the season of the year when rice is planted, to honor the gods of the rice fields. Amongst all of these kinds of events, this Shinto rice-planting ritual, believed to originate from dedication ceremonies held at Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine some 1,800 years ago, is especially rich in tradition. Having been passed down since ancient times, this splendid ritual is said to retain all the details of the original ceremony. As the rice fields are located on the temple grounds, rice sprouts grown in the presence of the deity are planted by women given this special role, while a variety of dengaku ritual music and dancing is held on a stage in the center of the field. By the time the final performance, called Sumiyoshi dance, is held, the rice planting is complete.
