This mysterious spectacle plays out every year on August 24 during the Kuta Hanagasa Dance. A hanagasa is an andon (paper lantern) adorned with artificial flowers of various colors. The dancers light these lanterns and then softly sing doka songs as they visit Kaminomiya Shrine, Okawa Shrine, and Shikobuchi Shine, where they perform the ceremonial Hanagasa Dance. During the event, the sound of drumming pierces the silence. As if in response, the singing then starts along with a relaxed, deliberate dance. Illuminated by warm light, the swaying hanagasa create a truly dreamlike scene.See huge Taimatsu torches closely gathered in front of the entrance! A unique Kyoto festival, which is one of the three Great Fire Festivals of Japan.An annual celebration at Yuki Shrine that is reminiscent of the time when Yuki Daimyojin, which was enshrined at the Emperor’s palace,was transferred to Kurama in 940. Torches are ignited in unison at the cry of “Shinji ni mairasshare (come visit the ritual)!” when 6 p.m. comes. The sights of the parade of torches being carried to the chants of “Sairei, Sairyo” and the youths crowding together with Taimatsu torches in front of the entrance, are spectacular. After they strike their staves together and the hanagasa are purified, the hono odori (offering dance) begins.御神輿の上には鎧武者が乗り、後ろの綱を町の乙女たちが引く。この綱を引くと「易く出産ができる」と古くから伝えられている。御神輿の上に人が乗り、女性も参加する珍しい祭り。The portable shrine carries an armored warrior and the rope in the back is pulled by maidens of the town. It has been said since ancient times that women can give childbirth easily if this rope is pulled.
