Let’s experience Ningyo Joruri!Wachi Ningyo Joruri is said to have originated at the end of the Edo period in present-day Osako, Wachi-Town. At the time, it was little more than the manipulation of papier-mâché puppets, but after the Meiji and Taisho eras, or early Showa period, to be precise, a performing troupe was formed. After the war, a Gidayu association was organized, which purchased most of the heads currently in use and actively put on performances to improve its members’ artistic skills. In 1962, the Wachi Folk Art Preservation Society as well as a cooperative system were established, and in 1985 Wachi Ningyo Joruri was designated an Intangible Cultural Asset by Kyoto Prefecture.
