The miracle of “three as one.” Characters subtlety hanging on fingertips.Tonda Ningyo(Tonda Puppets) are a form of Ningyo Joruri (puppet theater) passed down since the Edo period in the small settlement of Kita-Tonda (present-day Tonda Town, Nagahama City) in Omi, northeast of Lake Biwa. About twenty households participate. Three puppeteers operate the puppets, performing to the accompaniment of Gidayu narration and shamisen music. The origin dates back to 1835, when a troupe of Awa puppet theater performers came to perform in this area but were caught in a heavy snowstorm, forcing them to cancel their show. To cover their travel expenses, they left their puppets at an inn and returned home. Later, young theater enthusiasts from the village gathered and began practicing joruri using those puppets, marking the start of this tradition. From 1844 to 1851, Yoshida Kingo, a renowned puppet master and master carver of puppet heads from Osaka, came to Tonda. He established the puppet troupe “Yoshida-za,” which was invited to perform at nearby temples, shrines, and festivals. In 1874, they obtained a performance license from Shiga Prefecture and began activities as the “Tonda Ningyo Kyoyudan” (Tonda Puppet Troupe), passed down through generations from father to son. While beloved both locally and beyond, performing in neighboring villages, the troupe’s activities temporarily declined due to a lack of successors. Feeling a sense of crisis, young people transformed the group, allowing it to include members from outside Tonda. In 1979, they restarted activities as the reborn “Tonda Ningyo Kyoyudan.” Today, they perform at local elementary and junior high schools, conduct touring performances within and outside the prefecture, and even accept international students, striving to preserve and pass on the tradition. 0749-53-2650 / kankou@kitabiwako.jpDate:Regular performances twice a year (late July for summer, early December for autumn)Place:Tonda Ningyo Kaikan (758 Tonda-cho, Nagahama-shi)Reservations required for viewing(tonda_abe@yahoo.co.jp / 090-9042-4839)Get off at JR Hokuriku Main Line’s Nagahama Station, then drive 15 minutes by car / By car : 7 minutes from Odani Castle Smart ICPublic Interest Incorporated Association Nagahama TourismAssociation(0749-53-2650 / kankou@kitabiwako.jp)人形遣い。 The charm lies in the unique sound and the puppets' nimble movements, created by the puppeteers, the narrator (tayu), and the shamisen player working as one. The perfectly synchronized movements of the three puppeteers manipulating a single puppet are especially a must-see.「三人一組」の奇跡。 *The information provided is current as of the end of December 2025 (Reiwa 7).
