It is said to have originated in the pre-medieval period when Harunaga Sueto, a potter living in Kaminyu, offered a new pottery every year in return for the excellent clay he had obtained, and it took its present form in the Muromachi period (1336-1573). Three floats carry out a procession to Hachiman Shrine, an auxiliary shrine of Nyu Shrine. They are decorated with many pieces of pottery joined together, standing as tall as about 10 meters. The technique used to join the pottery decorations is still considered a secret tradition, and is known as a “strange festival” that has no precedent in Japan.
