Please check the latest information before planning your visit.A spring tradition that colors the shores of Lake BiwaThe Kusatsu Sanyare Dance is a folk tradition held every year on May 3rd that has been passed down in the southern region of Lake Biwa. People dance in a lively manner while playing musical instruments to the accompaniment of chanting that frequently uses the word “Sanyare”. It is said that Sanyare is a variation of the phrase good luck / all the best, and the dance is believed to be filled with wishes for a good harvest and to ward off epidemics. The origin of the Sanyare dance is not clear, but it is a form that was popular in the Kinki region centering on Kyoto in the Middle Ages. Dancers wearing bright costumes and happi coats holding drums and other instruments are surrounded by people carrying drums, gongs, sasara, and flutes, and dance to the uplifting music and short chanting. The costumes, dancing style, and rhythm of the Sanyare dance vary slightly in the seven areas of Kusatsu City it is performed (Yagura, Shimokasa, Kataoka, Natsuka, Shina, Yoshida, Shinanaka).
