The largest autumn festival in Iga, rich in history and culture. A spectacular procession of gorgeous, decorated floats and demons!The Ueno Tenjin Festival is an autumn festival at Ueno Tenjingu Shrine that has a proud tradition of over 400 years, beginning during the Edo period. In the main festival, a portable shrine parade leads the procession, followed by a parade of more than a hundred demons, and nine portable shrines follow, playing elegant festival music as they march through the autumn castle town. The scene that unfolds like a magnificent picture scroll is truly breathtaking. On the night before (Yoiyama) and two days before (Yoiyoiyama), lanterns and paper lanterns are lit up to create a fantastic decorative portable shrine scene.Grand Kagura performers who do lion dances in various regions gather once a year to offer their performances!Ise Dai Kagura travel across Japan to perform lion dances for people who cannot visit Ise Shrine. In the past, they distributed Ise Shrine talismans but currently distribute talismans of the Ise Daikagura Kosha association. They show what visits to Ise Shrine during the Edo period, full of recreation and faith, were like, as opposed to the visits today, which are more solemn. The five existing masters start visiting their respective parishes in the morning of New Year’s Day and visit various regions throughout the year.
