Kanko-odori” is a type of Bon dance performed mainly during the old Bon Festival in the central and southwestern regions of Mie Prefecture. The dancers wear a drum called a kanko on their chests and beat it with a bachi (small stick) in each hand as they dance. It is also characterized by the large and gorgeous headdresses and other objects carried on the dancers' backs. Kanko-odori can be classified into two types: “Amagoi Odori (rain dance),” which has a strong agricultural and ritualistic aspect, and “Nenbutsu Odori (Buddhist prayer dance),” which is danced mainly during the Bon Festival and has a strong character as a new Bon memorial service. The “Ryoshi Kanko Odori” held in the Ryoshi town of Matsusaka City is considered to be of the “Nenbutsu Odori” type, and is performed all night for three days from August 13 to 15, attracting a large crowd of tourists and local people. The dance songs are “Yare Yare Ondo,” “Fure Ondo,” and “ Dochu Ondo,” and the dance ends with “Sue wo moseba”. The Dochu Ondo includes songs such as “Amikake,” “Kijigari,” “Sakurako,” and “Yononaka“. The four dancers wear a type of hanagasa (hat) called “shagoma” on their heads, navy blue happi coats with Yamagata waves dyed through them, navy blue armored coats, and leg halves. The dancers dance twice at the first Bon Festival house, starting at Kainenji Temple. Under the Bon Festival moon, the dancers move powerfully with low singing voices and the sound of drums, thus making us feel that they are the incarnation of spirits.初盆の家の庭先や町の広場で、新盆の精霊供養のために踊られる念仏踊り「かんこ踊り」は、三重県中部から南西部地方で旧盆を中心に行われている盆踊りの一種。胸に掲鼓(か盆踊り三重県無形民俗文化財ここが見どころ !三重県/松阪市 Matsusaka City, Mie Prefecture20320300※掲載されている情報は、令和7(2025)年12月末現在の情報であり、お出かけの際には、事前に最新情報をご確認下さい。 *The information provided is current as of the end of December 2025 (Reiwa 7).
